I have just recently discovered Herding and went to
my very first Herding workshop in April 2005, hosted by the Koolie club
of Australia and run by Nsw Herding Judge and champion trailer Robert
Cox.
Hope was not interested at first (only chooks
and ducks are herdable!), but began to show interest right at the
end of the weekend - can't wait for the next one.
Hope keeping them gathered
Hope has quite a strong herding ability which she currently uses to help me put the ducks to bed at night. She's great at casting (she's left handed) and will vastly overshoot the group of ducks to be sure they're all there, before bringing them to me. Unfortunately she practiced herding on pet bantams who had no respect for her and only moved if she forced her body into their personal space, so teaching Hope to lose respect for herd animal's personal spaces. Now she pushes the ducks so fast, they're run off their feet unless I give frequent 'down' commands to give the ducks time to regain their composure.
Fox just had heaps of fun chasing and barking, hopefully he'll learn some manners next time! Fox getting
the idea and holding his flock
